Weekly Accomplishments
Week five has been a much more relaxed week compared to the previous four. Because I worked ahead last week, and we didn't have a lecture covering the findings section I used this week to work on gathering all the data I would need from the letters. My first accomplishment is doing just that. I went back through all my letters and got all the numbers from them organized into a excel sheet with categories so that next week I can finish the map with Kayla's help. The process itself only took a few hours but was very monotonous so I had been putting it off for a while as I worked on other things. My second accomplishment is creating a 3d model. My only 3d modeling experience was playing with Sketchup in 6th grade, so it had been a while. Creating a 3d model is not a massive accomplishment or anything but it is a good skill to have. The third accomplishment is bonding more as a team. This week and last weekend especially we did a lot of things together as a big group rather than in small sets. We went to laurel together and a good chunk of us went to the WWII museum in New Orleans. I have gotten to know everyone better and work with them more.
Roadblocks
The biggest roadblock of the week has definitely been not having clear direction on the overarching goal of the week. Not fully knowing what I am supposed to be accomplishing in specific has been somewhat stressful in that I feel as though I am behind or not getting things done even though I don't have any main thing I must do. The second roadblock I experienced was not ending in the library. While not a big deal, it is easier to make myself go to my carrell if I am in the library rather than having to walk to the library. For example I am writing this in the media room in the dorm rather than at the library because we ended at the dorm today. While I have still gotten work done I get more done when I am in a space designated for work. The third roadblock is waking up early. I have gotten used to waking up for class at 9 but pushing it back even a little bit is a small struggle. I am not remotely a morning person so early mornings aren't easy but I am happy I've gotten used to waking for 9 am class.
Things I have learned
This week I learned a decent amount. The first big thing I learned was more about my letters. While I had all ready read all of them, having all of the data from the letters all laid out and categorized in one place has made things a lot easier to understand. The second thing I learned was that Hattiesburg was a big hub for the civil rights movement. Especially since I study this period a lot I was surprised I hadn't heard of Hattiesburg before. Some things I learned were new and others I had heard or read before but hadn't known or realized they took place in Hattiesburg. It was interesting seeing many similarities in local communities I study and the history of Black Hattiesburg. The final thing I learned is really a lot of things clumped together. I had a lot of knowledge reinforced this week. From the CV lecture to the 3d modeling lecture, or even the AR lecture, I got a lot of pieces of knowledge I learned in my own time reinforced with formal education.
What's Next
Next up is getting my mapping component done. Tuesday next week Kayla is going to host essentially a help session which I will use to get any help I may need as I take the data I collected this week and put it into maps. The maps will be useful in creating conclusions for the findings section. That should put me at a good spot especially since next week is short.
