Thesis

"How did different counties in Mississippi handle both the funding and day to day operations of schools during reconstruction."

During the period of early reconstruction, the south had its hands full with the reordering that needed to be done. Where money went was a key factor in deciding what took priority. Mouths needed feeding and widows needed to be provided for, on that everyone could agree. Schools were a different issue however. How much in taxes should be put to schools and how those taxes should be collected was done very differently in different places. Even how schools were built and staffed varied. Various community and school leaders wrote to the governors in this period to express worries over funding and joys over improvements to education.
